HATS OFF… TO THOSE WITH HATS ON
HOW TO WEAR 3 DIFFERENT CLASSIC HAT STYLES
Ever think to yourself: “That guy looks killer in that classic hat, I just don’t look good in them.” Start by changing your belief! It’s just a matter of trying them on until you find a match (much like finding a mate, without the complexity ;) When you feel something… a lift in confidence, perhaps? You found the one (for now)! Here are 3 different styles for inspiration:
THE TRILBY (Fall & Winter)
Named after an 1894 novel and play titled “Trilby” where the hat was featured in London. Classic hat company Lock & Co describes it as having a “shorter brim which is angled down at the front and slightly turned up at the back” according to Wikipedia. Frank Sinatra added to its popularity in mid-century times until hats faded out of fashion. However, they have been making a comeback the last few decades!
Work in the financial or legal sector? Be part of bringing the classic look full circle by pairing it with your suit and coat. In the arts? Match it with jeans, sneakers, tee and slick jacket!
THE NEWSBOY (Fall & Winter)
This hat goes back to the early 1910’s - 1920’s. Although, newsboys in fact wore these flat caps while on their routes, they were typically worn by the general working class in Europe & North America (docks, steel, shipping) around the industrial revolution. In fact, I recall being asked in the UK or Ireland why I was wearing a… ‘farmer’s hat’ ? With time, they were worn by all classes including wealthy drivers, sportsmen and golfers.
I like to dress a la hipster style… a little bit of classic and modern mixed together. Like this modern fit, head to toe with some classic flare (tie & cardigan). Think creative meeting over coffee or happy hour at the brewery.
STRAW (Spring & Summer)
Generally made from plant fibers, straw hats have been protecting humans from the sun since the middle ages. That’s why I typically only where them in warm weather / outdoor events. They’ve been made fashionable from Franklin Roosevelt & Harry Truman to YOUR trip to the beach or islands this weekend!
Wear them with formal wear to a derby party in early May…
Or a casual getaway to the beach or beach resort.
Tips:
When trying on hats…
Wear neutral colors so clothing does not distract your vibe with how a hat feels or fits.
It’s YOUR vibe…
They can’t possibly feel how YOU feel in your hat. Don’t let anyone ruin your vibe.
Cheers, gents!
