I NEED TO GET BACK TO THE YEAR 1955! (APRIL EDITION)

April of 1955 had its share of historic transitions as the chapter of American and allied pride of World War 2 shifted to the Cold War. Technology and entertainment much like any other moment in history continued to alter the mindsets of all.

The World

Sir Winston Churchill is viewed as the quintessential gentleman for his dashing style and taste for cigar and spirits. At an astonishing age of 80, Winston Churchill steps down from his second term as Prime Minister after suffering multiple strokes. Winston Churchill publicly warned of an “Iron Curtain” in Eastern Europe following an unexpected defeat of the Conservative Party just after the second World War (hard to believe the country couldn’t band together to re-elect the steadfast Allied leader… but that’s politics) only to be re-elected again to guide the country through the Korean conflict, the Malayan Emergency and European unity.

Music

Rolling Stone magazine writes “Rock N’ Roll starts here” as Chuck Berry records and releases his first single titled “Maybelline.”  

Our thoughts: This song was not only timeless but could also arguably play a role in the slow melting of racial tensions in the United States being one of the first to cross boundaries charting in Rhythm and Blues, Country Western and Pop. Teenagers across the states were inspired by its lyrics of fast cars and sexuality.

(FYI: By the end of 1955 it would sell 1 million records)
