The handkerchief can actually be traced back as far as the ancient Greeks, English and French noblemen, often credited to King Richard II of England. In preserved documents, he was known to carry a square piece of cloth to wipe his nose. By the 20th century, the pocket square became widely used as a male fashion accessory with jackets, suits and vests.
