INN & OUT: BARCELONA, SPAIN

Gothic & Religious History, big music festivals, unique shopping & dining to some of the greatest cocktail bars in the world. Here are a few suggestions we have when visiting:

HOTEL:

Cotton House: An adorable boutique affiliated with the Marriott Bonvoy program, so we stayed free on points! The building dates back to the 19th century paying homage to its days as headquarters of the Cotton Textile Foundation with many aspects still in its original state. The staff is extremely friendly & professional as they keep this little gem thriving with a rooftop pool, bar and restaurant terrace (which had a magnificent tapas menu, the best patatas bravas we’ve had). There is also a library which is stunning where one can host a dinner party or even wedding. We thought the hotel was lovely enough, it deserved its own blog here.

Tip: If your phone can create white noise, we advise it. The walls are a bit thin, so thin we heard our neighbors enjoying each other’s company (VERY much). No judging here!

Edition Hotel: Also a Marriott Bonvoy, a bit more upscale… however, less culturally & historically connected to the city. Yet, its right in the middle of everything you’ll want to explore.

Tip: Ask for Andrew in the Punch Room, tell him Gent Life sent you!

DINING:

Carlota Akeyena: Although it may seem strange to suggest a Japanese Kobi spot, it was by far the most amazing dining experience we had from the soup to the meat. No worries on decision making… there is no menu, but everything is incredible from soup, dumplings, beef and melon dessert. Enjoy! We’ll come back here for sure!

Mensi Tapas / Petit Tapas:  If you can’t get into one, try the sister restaurant next door. Sold to us as the best tapas in Barcelona and it didn’t disappoint from the croquets, charcutier and truffle ravioli. The location is just inside the center of the city (so right in the heart of exploration).

LIBATIONS:

You may not have been aware, but Barcelona has an INCREDIBLE cocktail bar scene with several being ranked in the Top 50 worldwide. Here were a few we enjoyed, there are many more:

Paradiso: Voted the #1 cocktail bar in the world, mostly for their interactive experience. You’ll get the gist quickly upon being greeted by the mixologists when you first walk in. It opens at 4PM and you’ll need to scan the QR code ASAP if you want a crack at getting in, it fills up fast!

Dr. Stravinsky: This was my personal favorite as the experience somewhere between the Little Red Door (Paris) and Macera Bar (Madrid). If you haven’t been to either of those, think a mix between abstract taste & science. Its located in an adorable medieval streets of La Ribera – El Born where we enjoyed the best local shopping / old world architecture.

Mariposa Negro: Not necessarily ranked worldwide like others in the city, we waited in the que here for Paradiso Bar and found it very unique. All the drinks are served in ceramic cups created by other guests before you… the creations were also unique, interesting and our mixologist Matilda was lovely. Hopefully, she’s still working there when you arrive!

ACTIVITIES:

El Born District: While waiting for a spot at Paradiso or cocktail bars alike, this area is prime for fantastic shopping from local designers with unique style in art & fashion.

Tip 1: Want a pair of shades, local to Barcelona worn by Brad Pitt, Rosalia, Beyonce or Jay Z? Check out Etnia Barcelona. They have an AMAZING location with retail on the bottom floor, design & offices upstairs including an amazing rooftop bar for those whom make a purchase.

Tip 2: Don’t want to spend so big on local shades? Check out Charly Therapy just 3 minutes walking distance away for a pair of local shades that are far more affordable for any budget.

La Sagrada Familla: Yes, there are many amazing cathedrals all over the world (a few incredible ones just in Barcelona, alone). However, few have the notoriety of this in terms of architectural history. At least see it in person if you’re not into museums, but there are tours.

Militaria BCN: To my history buffs, especially those who can’t get past 20th century war (particularly WWII) then this spot is for you. Never have I been in a collector’s shop w/ artifacts as far and wide as this.. and they’re for sale! (German, Soviet, Japanese, Spanish etc).

Cheers, gents!
