THE BREAKERS: OVER 100 YEARS OF LUXURY

Henry Flagler founder of Standard Oil and Florida East Coast Railway (and countless others) had an eye for luxury. On January 1896 Flagler opened the luxury hotel The Palm Beach Inn. After many requests for “rooms by the breakers,” Flagler renamed the establishment The Breakers Hotel in 1901.

Two fires in 1903 and 1925 lead to a fireproof concrete renovation by the architectural firm Schultze and Weaver (Waldorf Astoria, The Piere) and New York based Turner Construction Company (Lincoln Center, MSG, NY Stock Exchange, NYC Subway projects, and the JFK library to name a few). The hotel reopened December 29th, 1926 and has since hosted distinguished guests such as JC Penny, The Vanderbilt’s, JP Morgan, The Rockefellers, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Harry Truman.

The hotel has clearly made efforts to both sustain its enriched and charming history all while updating its aesthetic with contemporary attributes like “HMF,” a dining/lounge named after Henry Morrison Flagler himself. The room showcases incredibly articulate gilded ceilings hand-painted by Florentine artists and food that is absolutely exquisite (we recommend the Korean short ribs, shrimp pad thai and potentially the best Wagyu beef sliders we’ve ever tried).

The grounds include multiple golf courses (envisioned and laid out in 1896), tennis courts, spa, shopping, fitness, 4 pools, 5 whirlpools, 9 restaurants, and acres of beach for one or an entire family to enjoy!

PS: We highly recommend tapas at HMF and at least one cocktail at the Seafood Bar for its views and incredibly unique bar. Ever been able to say you had a drink over a fish tank?
